It is true that finding materials on the Moon, or any other large celestial body, such as water is important but it may not be as important as some would believe.
At present time and conditions, taking water to the moon is very expensive. It's similar to taking the first model A ford, loading it with a few gallons of water, and driving it from New York to LA, it's an expensive and long journal.
But if you look at it in terms of technological advances and progress, it isn't really that important. To continue the example, 18 wheelers transport goods, including bottled water, from New York to LA every day. Another example, one yearly trip to the moon every year is not the same as one or several a month.
It’s also similar to Columbus discovering and trying to colonize America but the speed at which technology and progress are advancing is much faster and continues to increase.
