When the Republicans' Bush and Cheney were elected, they immediately started working on obtaining more powers for the President and deregulated the banking industry.
Similarly, when the Conservative Harper government was elected, he immediately started trying to obtain more power and seeks to abolish the Canadian Senate.
Elected governments may not like it when the Senate blocks some of the more controversial and debated legislation, and the fact they do not have absolute and total power to do anything they desire, but it does protect Canadians from "flash in the pan" elected radical governments that could greatly harm Canada like Bush and Cheney have harmed the US, US economy, and global economy.
